   Then compare the same things in each quote: crew size, hourly rate, minimum time, any trip or travel fee, materials, and what protection is included.

3. Verify each mover before you book

   • Virginia DMV. The DMV regulates household goods movers operating within the state. Look for the company in the DMV's database of authorized motor carriers and ask for its authorization number. A mover that cannot give you one is a red flag.
   • Insurance and bonding. Household goods carriers must keep a $50,000 surety bond or letter of credit on file with the DMV. Ask for a certificate of insurance and ask what happens if something is damaged.
